Tuesday January 7, 2025 2:15pm - 3:00pm PST
Explore California's new Alternative Pathway (Alt Pathway) to a high school diploma for students with extensive support needs that was signed into law in 2022. Learn details about eligibility criteria, guidance for IEP teams, and implications for students, families, and LEAs. This interactive presentation will address the history, legislative intent, and practical considerations of this alternative pathway, including considerations for Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams, and support for families navigating this new opportunity.

Understanding the Alternative Pathway:
In October 2021, the California Department of Education's California Alternative Pathways to a High School Diploma Workgroup released recommendations for ensuring all students with disabilities had a viable pathway to earn a high school diploma, particularly for students who previously earned certificates of completion. Recent amendments to California Education Code 51225.31 now provide an alternative pathway to a high school diploma for students with significant cognitive disabilities, defined as students who take the California Alternate Assessment and meet additional state-defined criteria.

Eligibility and Key Requirements:
(b) An individual with exceptional needs, who entered ninth grade in the 2022-23 school year or later, shall be eligible for the exemption and award described in subdivision (a) if their individualized education program provides for all of the following:
(1) The pupil's individualized education program team has deemed the pupil eligible to take the state alternate assessments as described in subdivision (k) of Section 60640.
(2) The pupil is required to complete state standards aligned coursework to meet the statewide course requirements specified in Section 51225.3.

This session aims to provide insight, clarity, and practical guidance for LEAs, students, and families as they navigate California's Alternative Pathway to a High School Diploma in this evolving educational landscape.
